The Man Who Tricked the Devil!

Today we have the last story (thank the lard) from Tales of Horror #7 1952, aka the crummiest comic book in my collection... NOTE: when I say "crummy" I'm talkin' about a multitude of things like the print failure! every page loose! zero spine! fallin' apart / brittle condition! -- I certainly have nothing against the art or stories. So for you issue completists, also see: "Dinky!", "Die for the Beggar", and the really great "Beast from the Deep!" that we posted waaay back deep in the 2008 THOIA Archives!

Referring to "the inside dope" loses some of his Satanic majesty....

Man, all technical annoyances--of construction, of decoration, of simple grammar--aside, this was quite an excellent issue. I thought this tale was probably the weakest, but behold that amazing splash page! The grindhouse bell-bottomed devil shadow! The three-panel progression where what's-his-name bleeds himself to death! This was really first rate work.

The only problems I have with this story are as follows 1) How would these guys know what the Devil is up to/his latest victory over a mortal? Do these guys and the Devil hang out at the same bar and listen to the Devil brag about his latest conquest? (And if so, what is the beer of choice of old scratch? Probably Not St Pauli Girl)
2) Why would the Devil want to bother to win a lawyer's soul? Don't tell me there is a shortage of Lawyers down there.

Footnote: the book arrived today Karswell and it is Great! I sent you an email to let you know it arrived. Lenny S

I love that the king of all darkness needs a pretty modest bathing suit!

Honestly, though, how would this have ever been a victory for the lawyer? The devil still gets his soul in the end, contract or not, he just had to wait longer for it. For the smartest guy around, he didn't plan this out very well!

The wish for the "daughter of the most beautiful man and beautiful woman" was a little convenient! Who'd phrase it that way?

The art's a little flaky in spots, but a awesome smirking devil on page 5, panel 2.

Hi! Love this blog as I am a big fan of horror comics. Can I make a suggestion, though? Aside from the archive, could you maybe organize the posts according to comic book and then put the links in the sidebar? That would be so awesome. Thank you!

Great set of comments, up next I have one more story from the Tales of Horror series (different issue with much better printing) and then we'll dig into some other random stories.

Thanks again for everyone's continued participation here at THOIA, comments are important to keep things rolling. Suggestions are nice too, although with over 1500 posts now archived, it's doubtful I'd ever find the time to do what ANON suggests up there. Sorry!

Another loopy 1950's Canadian horror comic from Superior Publishers? Great! Looking forward to it.
